Stuart, FL–Despite the challenging times, the Board of Governors at Mariner Sands Country Club, a member-owned private club located along the famed Treasure Coast, is happy to announce the renovation of the Gold Course–one of two championship golf courses on site. The project, started in the midst of the pandemic, was helmed under the expertise of renowned golf architect, Kipp Schulties. The total estimated cost for the renovation was approximately $2.25 million but was entirely funded with existing golf reserves– no increase in capital dues or special assessments as a result of this project to the members.
Due to aging greens on the Gold Course resulting in inconsistent roll, footprints, ball marks, watering related problems and more, the 15-year old course was destined for extensive improvements. As with any sport, competition is part and parcel of the enjoyment of the game; upgrading the golf course results in better playability.  The greens were enlarged from 4300 sq. ft. to 6300 sq. ft. to allow for more pin placements and eliminate heavy traffic areas. Other features and enhancements to greatly improve course aesthetics include improved soft fairways, new and redesigned bunkers, new rock wall bulkheads, and newly styled timber bridges. Additionally, the plan includes the installation of natural cap rock walls for enhanced course allure; these walls require less maintenance and have an infinite lifespan; no need to worry about improvements or replacements.

A very exciting upgrade is the redesign for three holes (18, 9, 7) on the course. Schulties’ design changes, will improve the golf experience and greatly enhance the visual beauty of the course. Also, greater attention was dedicated to Hole 18 (given its proximity and visibility from Mariner Sands Drive), the redesign will make a great impression on visitors and member prospects; enhancing curb appeal is essential for private golf courses when attracting new members. Finally, greatly enriched landscaping will better distinguish the approach to and appearance of the first tee.

According to Bill Ward, General Manager at Mariner Sands, “Kipp Schulties, is one of the most sought-after golf course architects in South Florida. He has worked alongside many PGA golf professionals and/designers including Jack Nicklaus and Fred Couples and his portfolio includes some of the most prestigious clubs in Southeast Florida region. Schulties and his team provide a blend of experience in golf course design, engineering, project management, and new exciting elements made possible by modern construction equipment and methods. We are thrilled to have him on board again. Overall, it’s a ‘Hole-In-One’ for existing and prospective members and overall player satisfaction.”
