Unforgettable Scenery, Quality Design Make Course One Of Grand Strand’s Best

Which golf course is the best in Myrtle Beach? It’s a question that has been asked countless times and given the subjective nature of the query, it’s difficult to pin down a “right” answer.

But there is one certainty: on any credible list of Myrtle Beach’s best golf courses, Tidewater Golf Club, “the Pebble Beach of the East,” is somewhere near the top. The acclaimed Ken Tomlinson layout is nestled like a sleeping giant between the Cherry Grove Inlet and the Intracoastal Waterway in North Myrtle Beach with eight holes along them.

Tidewater has long enjoyed critical acclaim being named best new course in America by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine upon its 1990 opening, making it the first course to capture the coveted accolade from two of America’s highest profile magazines. PGA Tour player Hale Irwin says “Tidewater Golf Club is the finest and most spectacular golf course on the East Coast.” Tidewater is best known for its stunning views. The third, fourth, 12th and 13th holes play along Cherry Grove and there isn’t a prettier quartet of holes along the Grand Strand.

While the water holes attract most of the attention, the course’s inland offerings are what make the layout so strong. A pair of short par 4s and the beefy 411-yard 14th hole, among others, have helped Tidewater earn a spot on various top 100 lists over the years.

The course’s place at the top of the Myrtle Beach market was solidified by a 2014 greens renovation project with TifDwarf Bermuda that has helped ensure Tidewater is annually one of Myrtle Beach’s best conditioned layouts.

The quality of the course is reflected in the online reviews it has generated. Tidewater is the area’s top-ranked course, according to TripAdvisor, and Connecticut resident Newbs15kens wrote in a 5-star review on February 12, 2019, “This is my favorite course in MB. Great layout with holes along the inland waterway and views of the ocean. Condition is always good even in the winter. Lucky enough to have 80 degree day.”

With its classic yet contemporary design, the course offers thrilling rewards to shotmakers who can take chances, use proper course management and welcome special challenges.
