An hour’s drive from Ashville and less than two hours from Charlotte, Rumbling Bald is one of Western North Carolina’s only multi-course golf resorts. Located on the northern shore of man-made Lake Lure, the resort is home to the W.B.Lewis gorgeous Bald Mountain course and the Dan Maples challenging Apple Valley layout.
The Resort’s marquee course, Apple Valley stretches to nearly 6,800 yards and features expansive views of 3,200 foot high Bald Mountain and the surrounding Lake Lure area. Maples estimated 75% of the shots at Apple Valley are either level or downhill, virtually unheard of for a mountain course. Shimmering mountain lakes border 12 holes but only occasionally come into play.
Bald Mountain, my personal favorite, at 6,300 yards is renowned for its unique configuration of five par 5s and five par3s. Movie buffs will appreciate the 16th green, the original backdrop of a scene from the everlasting Patrick Swayze movie “Dirty Dancing.”
A protege’ of famed golf course architect George Cobb, Lewis did an amazing job or carving a beauty out of the Bald’s mountain terrain with the ease of play from tee to green.
