Summerfield Crossings Golf Club- “A Stroke Better Than the Rest”

Summerfield Crossings Golf Club, located in Riverview, Florida is south Hillsborough County’s premier golf facility owned and operated by Jeffrey “Doc” Blanchard and his son Jason, a PGA Professional since 1994. They bought the Ron Garl designed golf course in 2003 and have carved out a hard-earned niche in the volatile and competitive Tampa Bay golf market.

“We’re the perfect blue collar golf course,” says Jason. “We have a ‘Cheers’ mentality where everyone feels at home, including our staff and customers.” Although the atmosphere is relaxed the facilities are top-notch, beginning with the golf course.

The par 71 championship Summerfield Crossings Golf Club, with a rating & slope of 73/125, opened in 1987 with an original design concept to create a links-style layout. However the previous owners decided to plant 1200 pine trees evolving the “Crossing” into a combination of links and tree lined holes. The course does distinguish itself with scenic rolling hills, numerous pot bunkers and tiny tifdwarf bermuda undulating greens. Water is prevalent on at least half the holes.

Mr. Florida Golf and good friend Ron Garl stated, “Our design philosophy for Summerfield Crossings was to utilize and enhance the existing terrain, including the strategic location of bunkers offering options and challenges for all levels of players as is found at many of the great links courses in Scotland.”

You can play the course as hard or easy as you want. At over 6900 yards from the tips, the Crossings will challenge even the most skilled golfers. With four sets of tees, you can choose the length that best suits your game and still enjoy a fair test of golf. If your clubs are giving you a fit, you can always switch to Foot Golf at Summerfield Crossings.

If you want to stop playing from the forward tees or need help with your game, Summerfield Crossings is home to the Inner Circle Golf Academy, part of the Golf Channel Academy network of world-class coaches and teaching facilities dedicated to improving your game. Lessons are available from Head Professional, James Gottschalk. You can call the Pro Shop at 813-671-3311 for more information or to schedule your lesson.

The extensive practice facilities include a two tier driving range, expansive practice putting surface, separate chipping green and a dedicated bunker area.  There also is a short game range with targets in the 30 to 40 yard distances, ideal for honing in on better wedge shots.

The clubhouse features a well stocked pro shop and Doc’s Grille, a full service restaurant that comfortably seats 160( in other words, a full field tournament or a medium size wedding). If you have your sights set on the latest driver, they have a ‘try before you buy’ demo program, and a professional clubfitter onsite to help customize your clubs to elevate your game. Doc’s features casual dining in an appealing setting with a full bar to satisfy your food and refreshment needs.

Summerfield Crossings is the ideal venue for tournaments, corporate outings, weddings and meetings. They have a variety of packages available for groups from 8 to 144. Their professional staff is there to assist with all the details of your event and make sure it is a great success.

As a semi-private facility, Summerfield welcomes daily fee play, but also offers seasonal and year-round memberships for individuals, families and local businesses. Membership privileges include 14 day advanced tee times, no green fees, reduced cart fees, unlimited use of the practice facilities and more. Contact the Club for specific rates and more information.

The Stand Up and Play Foundation is a nonprofit organization close to Jason Blanchard’s heart that is changing lives of wheelchair users and other people with disabilities with a remarkable piece of equipment- the Paramobile- that allows them to stand up and play sports and engage in other everyday activities. The Blanchard family has made it their mission to bring a Paramobile unit to their club and they just hosted the First Annual Para Golfer Golf Tournament in July. Way to go guys!
