Sea Pines Country Club Growing for Future

Discover the Private Side of Sea Pines.

I have been visiting Hilton Head Island for years to enjoy the great golf, dining, boating and wonderful places to stay. At the southern end of the Island is the beautiful Sea Pines Resort, home of the RBC Heritage which celebrated its 50th Anniversary this year. The Heritage is the only PGA TOUR event held in South Carolina and is contested on the Pete Dye designed Harbour Town Golf Links with its finishing hole next to the famed Lighthouse.

When you go through the gates to enter the 5,200 acre Resort, traveling down the road to your accommodations or to play the three outstanding golf courses at Sea Pines, if you look to your right through the towering pines you might catch a glimpse of a golf course hidden away.  The Sea Pines Country Club is Hilton Head Island’s most distinguished club providing a lifestyle that is far from ordinary but with a feeling that is just like being home. The Sea Pines Country Club is a not-for-profit private member owned club. The immaculate golf course was developed to fulfill the need for a private course and designed by Arnold Palmer in 1973 and redone by Clyde Johnston in 2001. Playing conditions are second to none on the Island.

On a recent visit the wife and I got to experience a day at the club, tucked away from the maddening crowds that take Hilton Head by storm during busy vacation periods and RBC Heritage week. Our host for the day was Robbie Ames, General Manager & COO of the exclusive country club. Robbie’s diverse background as a PGA playing professional, caddie for his brother Stephen when they won the 2006 Players Championship, Director of Golf at Cinnamon Hill in Jamaica, Director of Jim Flick Golf Academy, Manager at Desert Mountain Club in Scotsdale with an ever present smile and warm personality, makes him the ideal choice to take Sea Pines into its latest upgrade. With a healthy and growing membership, Sea Pines Country Club has all first class amenities for its members and families to enjoy.

In 2016 the members approved the Vision 2020 Enhancement Plan. The clubhouse was transformed to present a modern and contemporary Blue Heron Pub and Grille for an elevated dining experience, bringing the breathtaking tidal marsh views into every angle. The 6,250 square-foot area features a color palate reflective of the Club’s island setting. The Blue Heron also offers outdoor seating with a screened patio and deck adjacent to the signature 18th hole green. The elegant Rotunda dining room is large enough for large charity events and for members to enjoy the exquisite offerings of Executive Chef Brian Coseo, while overlooking beautiful Calibogue Sound. The delectable menu and unique plate presentations makes one feel like you are definitely having a five star culinary experience.

“As the preeminent private club in Hilton Head, we are always looking for ways to enhance the member experience and position the club for vitality and growth,” says Ames.

A $450,000 pool renovation project entailed modernizing the indoor saline and the 24 meter outdoor pool complexes, the spa, outdoor deck and building a brand new children’s splash pool.

Starting this fall a $2.55 million fitness center renovation and expansion to a second floor will begin, increasing the size of the facility from 2,500 square feet to 7,500. It will feature a new-multi purpose room for group classes and gatherings, with a cafe’ serving healthy fare with expansive views of the club’s tennis courts and golf practice and driving range. There will also be a new ‘Grab & Go Cafe’ for swimming, golf and tennis enthusiasts.

The locker rooms will double in size, with new lockers, infrared saunas, and the latest cardio equipment. A new audio and video system will round out the outstanding improvements.

“Sea Pines Country Club was awarded an 88% on America’s Healthiest Clubs Health Report, making us one of the country’s healthiest private clubs,” adds Ames. “Wellness is an integral part of our lifestyle offerings, and we are thrilled to begin this final health-focused renovation.”

2018 has been a stellar year for the Sea Pines Country Club, as it was recently awarded Distinguished Club status and the only country club in South Carolina to earn this prestigious distinction.
