River Greens Tops Citrus Golf Trail & Celebrates 50

Located in the Highlands County, Florida village of Avon Park, just off Highway 27, the unique design of ASGCA past-president Jack Kidwell, River Greens golf course will be turning 50 years old in 2019. Still family owned and operated by Rodney and Lisa Davis, River Greens is a very playable and enjoyable track and one of the best conditioned courses in the county. Rodney and Lisa’s friendly and home style way of running a golf course makes members and guest golfers feel like family.

There is no big corporation or management company worrying about how to cut corners to squeeze every penny out of the facility, just a loving couple of 40 years doing what they do best for the folks in Highlands County and the visiting public who enjoy playing River Greens. Rodney takes care of the outside while Lisa takes care of the inside. Head Golf PGA Professional Jason Beatty runs the Pro Shop and is available for lessons and tournament assistance.

The course itself plays out to just over 6,000 yards with four sets of tees at a par of 72 so any level of golfer should enjoy the experience of playing River Greens. The challenge is in the layout, the tree lined fairways, changes in elevation and a fair amount of water hazards to keep you thinking while circumnavigating the course. The front nine has only one par 5, #9, which plays almost 180 degrees around a lake, and is the most interesting hole. You can bite off what you like, but beware, everything bounces back towards the lake. There is plenty of dry landing area, but it gets a bit tighter when you go pin-seeking. Rodney put in a second green because during the rainy season the water gets close to the original one and sometimes covers it.

Prior to playing #9, there is a reachable par 4, a tight 150 yard par 3 with a road left and water right and challenges on the other holes. For the heavy hitters, the 3 par 5’s on the inward nine will make your day or break it.

The clubhouse looks like a large home and the restaurant has plenty of seating for group outings. The fare is pretty much typical bar food with cold drinks for the thirsty and friendly service. River Greens has membership options for players who are full time, seasonal or just visiting for a month or three. It is just over an hour driving time from Orlando or Tampa, but the value of golf and the quality is there. Make your tee time at RGreens.com or call 863-453-5210.
