‘The Granddaddy’ Honored For Contributing More Than 50 Years To The Economic Heritage Of Horry County
Pine Lakes Country Club, one of the most prestigious courses on the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand, was honored this week by the Horry County Board of Architectural Review as a legacy business.
The Horry County Board of Architectural Review’s Legacy Business Recognition Program pays tribute to local businesses that have contributed to the economic heritage of Horry County for more than 50-continuous years.
“Today, we have the opportunity to honor a fabric in the community, ‘The Granddaddy’ and foundational cornerstone of Myrtle Beach, Pine Lakes Country Club,” said Jamie Thompkins, vice chair of the Horry County Board of Architectural Review & Historic Preservation, at the plaque presentation in August. ”The country club is a gem to both Horry County and the state of South Carolina as a whole, because of its unique southern charm and historic significance.”
Pine Lakes celebrated its 90th birthday in 2017. Originally known as Ocean Forest Golf and Country Club, the course was rechristened as Pine Lakes International Country Club in the 1950s under the ownership of Fredrick Albert Warner Miles, and placed on the National Register of Historic Places November 7, 1996. Both the course and the clubhouse underwent a $27 million renovation in 2009.
Known as the ‘The Granddaddy’ and the birth of Sports Illustrated, Pine Lakes is the original course on the Grand Strand. Throughout its rich history, Pine Lakes Country Club has been a must play for any golfer in the area, from locals and visitors alike. The combination of a pristine clubhouse, and championship-level par-70 course featuring water on a dozen holes, deep soft-sand bunkers, wide fairways that roll over natural dunes, and elevated greens make this course truly timeless.
“It is such an honor for Pine Lakes to be recognized today,” said Steve Mays, president of Founders Group International. “On behalf of myself and our 1,100 employees, we see ourselves as the caregivers of this historic property. We want to make sure we keep it at its highest standards for the future generations.”
