Hammock Dunes Club Hosts 2019 Florida Open

Hammock Dunes Club, a private gated oceanfront member-owned club along the central Atlantic coast of Florida, hosted the 73rd 2019 Florida Open, one of the most prestigious professional golf events in Florida July 12-14. Run by the Florida State Golf Association, The Florida Open is open to PGA golf professionals, amateur golfers and other professional golfers who meet the eligibility requirements outlined by the FSGA. The Florida Open has a rich history that dates back to 1942 including notable champions, such as Bob Murphy, Gary Koch, Charles Owens, Bruce Fleisher, John Huston, Dudley Hart and Bart Bryant among others. Two Hammock Dunes Club members participated in this year’s event – Bob Campione and Blake Marshall. The three day event was played on Hammock Dunes’ two championship courses, the Creek and Links. Looking to ‘Chomp the Competition,’ Four Florida Gators will be competing along side Men’s Head Golf Coach J. C. Deacon, the 2017 champion, and current player Blake Dyer of St. Petersburg. Defending Champion Gabriel Lench from Lake Mary, who went wire to wire last year at Innisbrook to capture the 72nd Florida Open, was in the field defending his title.

Sean Dale

On Sunday, the 14th, Sean Dale, who was born and raised in Jacksonville, shot a final round 63 on the Creek course to secure the 73rd Florida Open trophy. Sean is a 2014 graduate of the University of North Florida and has suffered through some health issues after playing on the Mackenzie Tour in Canada. We at eSouthernGOLF want to congratulate Sean on his admirable win.

Hammock Dunes Club, a Distinguished Emerald Club of the World, is a 660 member private club located in Palm Coast, Flagler County about half way between Daytona Beach and St, Augustine. Hammock Dunes has over two and one-half miles of oceanfront property and 5 miles of Intracoastal Waterway frontage. It is one of the very few communities where you can dock your yacht and walk to the beach. The 40,000 square foot Oceanfront Links Clubhouse is the center of activity for the members and guests of Hammock Dunes and recently completed a $7.2 million renovation and expansion including a 5,500 square foot Fitness Center. Fitness Director Walter Sam is the preeminent instructor and is certified in all genres of health and wellness including TPI(Titlist Performance Institute). They have incorporated the latest technology, Fitness on Demand, a virtual fitness program plus a full range of classes. There are five Har-Tru tennis courts with a lovely viewing pavilion and professional staff, four new pickle ball courts, two bocce courts and newly renovated resort-style 25 meter outdoor swimming pool and spa, heated year-round, with children’s splash pad and poolside food service.

Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean are the exquisitely maintained three seaside Croquet Lawns. Hammock Dunes boasts one of the largest croquet groups in Florida, with several nationally ranked players. Members play Golf Croquet, Aussie Rules Croquet and 6 Wicket Croquet with instruction available. The Croquet Club and members have been recognized as the USCA Croquet Club of the Year and has a Senior Player of the Year.

The warm and welcoming lobby of the Clubhouse seems to soothe the soul as you enter. Executive Chef Lance Cook and his culinary staff have raised the bar for fine dining and unique settings at Hammock Dunes. The all new Dunes Tavern overlooking the Ocean and the Croquet lawn is open all day for lite bites and libations. The intimate Seaside Dining Room is open for lunch every day and dinner on weekends, and the Oceanview Ballroom is the large function area for special events, weddings and holiday dining. No matter where the members decide to enjoy a meal, they are assured of the freshest ingredients and a delightful menu.

The Links Golf Course is a wonderful Tom Fazio design with generous fairways and quick greens, winding its way through the magnificent residential area and gorgeous landscaping at Hammock Dunes. The tees range in distance from the nearly 7,000 yard Golds to just over 5,000 forwards. The Links has three holes on the Ocean and twelve with water in play. There are few clubs in the country with a stunning oceanfront view on the green as at # 18, or the 7th tee box, where you can watch shrimp boats trolling offshore and ospreys flying overhead with ‘the catch of the day’ in their talons.

The Creek Course is one of the reasons Hammock Dunes Club is one of Florida’s premier golf communities. The Rees Jones designed pristine layout on 690 acres of natural  environment just west of the Intracoastal Waterway, about 5 miles from the Links, is an amazing and challenging course. With 7400 yards from the tips, there are numerous tees to allow different levels of golfers the opportunity to enjoy their round with Mother Nature. There are very distinct features on the golf course. From the beginning you play through a pine tree lined group of holes, after which hardwoods take over as your backdrop, then the tidal marshes and creek border most of the inward nine. It is a true aesthetic golf adventure with wildlife throughout the terrain. Both courses are Audubon Certified. The understated but elegant ‘low country’ Clubhouse fits perfectly into the natural surroundings and golf course. Not to be outdone by the Links Clubhouse, the delightful menu and specialty liquor bar will satisfy any gourmand.
