“Golf is like a love affair. If you don’t take it seriously, it’s no fun. If you take it seriously, it breaks your heart.”

Over the holidays, we lost one of golf’s greatest players and a good soul at age 83, Kathy Whitworth. Kathy, a World Golf Hall of Fame member, accumulated 99 career wins and 88 on the LPGA Tour, the most of any professional golfer, with runner-ups Sam Snead and Tiger Woods behind her. I did a demo-day interview with Kathy at Alaqua Lakes while she helped my wife Carol improve her golf swing. Whitworth was the ultimate professional with a warm heart and true love of the game.

After sending the Masters invitation to the wrong Scottie Stallings, the Masters team is allowing 17 LIV Golf players to participate in this year’s Masters Tournament the first week of April at Augusta National Golf Club. An interesting fact, over 10 million people watched the 2022 Masters. Meanwhile, the LIV golf season gets underway next month at Mayakoba, Mexico, with the loss of another executive. Matt Goodman, president of franchises, who was responsible for leading strategy and operations for LIV’s four-man teams, has resigned.

After 3 days of building a formidable lead at the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, Hawaii, Collin Morikawa bogeyed 3 holes on the back to allow a surging Jon Rahm to win and garner his 8th PGA TOUR title. What a chain of events and a sight to watch on the Plantation course on the island of Maui. On the island of Oahu, South Korean Si Woo Kim captured his fourth PGA title at the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club.

Back in Florida, The Mosaics Company has sold the Streamsong Resort to a group of investors in partnership with Kemper Sports of Chicago, who, in recent years, has been managing the golf courses and hotel in southwest Polk County.

The PGA Merchandise Show comes to town the week of January 23 after having much smaller and less attended shows the past few years because of Covid 19 restrictions. All of us at eSouthernGOLF are looking forward to a new breed of products and information that we will let you know about in the coming weeks.

Enjoy the cooler weather, and Go Play!
