An iterative computer-based design process reconfigured the Wilson Staff D9 irons blade shape and cavity as well as the size and location of the urethane-filled sole slots.

Wilson did hundreds of runs on their computers testing potential head designs to find the best combination of features for distance and control for use in a new iron model and the Staff D9s are the result.
One of the most visible changes from previous models being reconfiguration of the multiple sole slots or Power Holes. There are now three of these Power Holes that Wilson says allow the face additional flex at impact for more distance and unlike last year’s irons they are not symmetrically placed nor are they the same size. The one towards the rear of the sole is larger than the other two and proportionately closer to the heel. This helps counter a tendency of all irons with flexible faces to hit the ball slightly to the right due to the face having less area towards the heel.
Wilson also shifted the iron’s center of gravity closer to the sole thereby improving initial trajectory.
