Named one of the most beautiful mountain courses around by Golf Digest’s Places to Play, The Apple Valley located on the North end of stunning Lake Lure is one of the two courses at Rumbling Bald.

The course features shimmering mountain lakes adorning 12 holes, but with water coming into play only occasionally. The wide fairways and large, undulating greens and expansive views of Bald Mountain make this course definitely #BuckList worthy.

Architect Dan Maples, son of famed Ellis Maples, designed the course with a layout that will take you through the valley and then up toward Youngs Mountain and then back down again. Featuring five sets of tees playing from 4600-6800 yards, Maples was able to design the course with the vast majority of holes playing either level or downhill, making this a course enjoyable by players of all abilities.

There are several holes at Apple Valley that will capture your attention but the back nine is widely regarded as one of the best closing stretches in the Western Carolinas. The Final Four will leave you wanting to come back to play again another day.

Number 15 is a par 5 that plays 534 yards from the white tees. It’s almost a straight shot to the green, only a slight outcropping of trees approximately 100 yards from the green on the left. The ideal tee shot is down the middle with your second shot a little right of center, will leave you an easy approach to the green, protected by a lone front right bunker.

Number 16 is a 357 yard par 4 with a slight left bend in the fairway as you approach the green. The only bunkers to consider are behind the green. A good tee shot will leave you a 7-iron into the green with a chance for birdie.

Number 17 a relatively long par 3 at 163 yards and is slightly uphill with a forced carry over water. Play it safe with one club longer than what you think and you should have another opportunity for birdie.

Number 18 is a great finishing hole. Playing at 532 yards this par 5 says Grip it and Rip it. Water runs down the right side tee to green, so keep your shots middle or on the left side. Don’t get greedy, play for the par and end your round on a high note.
