LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

JULY 8, 2019

Patrick Cantlay, a Team Troon member, picked up his second PGA TOUR win at Muirfield Village in Ohio, capturing the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide. The California native received his trophy and check from Tournament Host Jack Nicklaus, who predicted Patrick’s success earlier in the week.

Jeongeun Lee6, outlasted the field at historic Charleston Country Club in South Carolina to win the U.S. Womens Open. This is Lee6’s rookie year and first win on the LPGA Tour although she has won seven times in her home country of Korea on the KLPGA.

Kevin Sutherland took the PGA Tour Champions Principal Charity Classic presented by Wells Fargo at Wakonda Club in Des Moines, Iowa, making up an 8 shot deficit.

Rory ran away at The RBC Canadian Open at the Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Ontario. McIlroy bombed his TP5 golf ball with his TaylorMade M5 Driver past the field, and made putts from everywhere with his TM Spider.

Lexi Thompson, a 24-year-old Florida native, made a 20 foot putt for Eagle, playing the Bridgestone TOUR BX ball, on the last hole to capture the Shop Rite LPGA Classic presented by Acer at the iconic Seaview Hotel and Golf Club near Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was Lexi’s 11th win in her storied career. The win, her 11th on the Ladies Tour, vaults her to #1 on the U.S. Solheim Cup. Lexi is the face of the Short Par 4 offerings.

On the Champions Tour, Tour Edge Ambassador Scott McCarren won for the third time this year at the Mastercard Japan Championship in Narita, maintaining his #1 status in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.

Gary Woodland, a Team Troon Ambassador, is the winner of the 2019 US Open Championship contested at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Fathers Day. Gary used his Wilson Staff irons and ProV1 ball to keep himself in play on the daunting layout to win by 3 strokes over Brooks who was trying to win 3 consecutive Opens. Watch out for Viktor Hovland, a Norwegian playing at Oklahoma State, who broke Jack Nicklaus’s record as low amateur at the Open with a score of 4 under.

On another US Open note, Fox did a much better job of covering it than CBS’s coverage of the PGA Championship. Kudos to the team of Paul Azinger, Curtis Strange, Brad Faxon and Joe Buck and the entire Fox Sports team.

Brooke Henderson is the winningest Canadian to play golf. At age 21, Brooke, who played her PING clubs with specially designed Lamkin grips, has won the Meijer LPGA Classic at Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan for her 9th LPGA victory and her 2nd this season. Her Father and Mother were there to watch her and her sister Brittany, her caddy, win. What a Fathers Day treat.

The Web.com Tour is no more. It is now the Korn Ferry Tour. Korn Ferry is an executive recruitment and global consulting firm that has signed a 10 year agreement with the PGA TOUR to sponsor the developmental tour, headed by Alex Baldwin.

Twenty-two year old Australian Hannah Green went wire-to-wire at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota to win her first LPGA event, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Her Australian entourage included 7-time Major winner and World Golf Hall of Fame member Carrie Webb who followed her along with boisterous bunch of Aussies which probably gave her the added fuel to take this major title. Her Srixon woods and clubs, Cleveland wedges and Srixon ball surely helped. Congrats Hannah!

After a third place at the U.S. Open last week, Chez Reavie maintained his good ball-striking prowess to win the Traveler’s at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut holding off the Northeast’s favorite son Keegan Bradley. It was Chez’s 2nd win on tour after an 11 year drought. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy who had TaylorMade woods and irons, Golf Pride grips, Odyssey putter, Vokey wedges and Titleist Pro V1ball in his arsenal.

Hometown Boy does good. A little long-in-the-tooth to be called ‘hometown boy’, Jerry Kelly enjoyed his win at the University Ridge Club, home of the Wisconsin Badgers, after a playoff with Retief Goosen and good friend Steve Stricker in Madison Wisconsin. Jerry, like Hannah, delivered the goods using Srixon ball and clubs

Cook County, Ireland native, 22-year-old James Sugare, has become the eighth Irishman to win the British Amateur played at Portmarnock Golf Club near Dublin.

SIX was the key number this week. Starting at the Detroit Golf Club, 36 year-old Nate Lashley went wire to wire to capture the Rocket Mortgage Classic  by 6 strokes for his first PGA TOUR win, using his PING clubs at Titlist Pro V1x golf ball. Then, Steve Stricker at age 52, with wife Nicki on the bag, took the U.S. Senior Open title with a wire to wire show at Notre Dame’s Warren golf course in South Bend by 6 strokes, playing all Titlist clubs and a Pro V1x ball for his second major on the Champions Tour.

Sung Hyan Park of South Korea returned to #1 on the LPGA Tour after winning the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship at the Pinnacle Country Club In Rogers. She played a full bag of TaylorMade clubs and ball to secure the win.

Some Good Golf News. Overall play in the United States has turned the corner and tracking upward for the first time in the years since 2008. With all the initiatives from the tours, PGA professionals and youth programs, Golf is back being a business for the future. Golf management companies and courses( both private and public) are making investments to improve their facilities. Hallelujah!
