When the Four Seasons decided to open their AAA Five Diamond Resort inside the gates of Walt Disney World in Orlando, they weren’t interested in golf. As time progressed, they had the opportunity to re-imagine the Tom Fazio designed Osprey Ridge golf course that opened in 1992 which already had a lovely clubhouse and practice facility adjacent to the Hotel site. Who better to redesign the course than the original architect.
Fazio and his design staff sat down with Regional Vice President and General Manager Thomas Steinhauer to enhance a great golf course into a spectacular one renamed Tranquilo, rerouting some of the original holes, designing new holes and creating an exciting finishing hole, a long par 3 with the Four Seasons Resort Orlando in the background. The course is a Certified Audubon Sanctuary winding its way around pine forests and marshland. The restaurant got a refurbishing and a new name-Plancha, a Cuban American delight with specialty drinks like the Hemingway Daiquiri all in a lakeside setting on the upper level of the Tranquilo clubhouse. The well stocked Pro Gift Shop has a full variety of up-scale apparel, the finest in clubs and balls and accessories for the discriminate player.
Golfers from around the world started showing up to experience the new golf club with its renowned ‘Four Seasons service’ and superb playing conditions. The PGA TOUR Champions and the Diamond Resorts Invitational also took notice and decided to bring their January extravaganza to Tranquilo Golf Club at Four Seasons. Diamond Resorts International recently completed their Third Challenge with LPGA, PGA TOUR Champions, sport notables and celebrities playing side by side to raise money for the Florida Hospital for Children in Orlando.
In 2017, Four Seasons’ Steinhauer called upon Tom Fazio again. This time to make the practice area as fine a facility as the golf course. Logan Fazio, Tom’s son was lead architect and responsible for the $2.5 million major expansion.
In January, I had the opportunity to attend the ribbon cutting. What I found was truly a world-class comprehensive practice compound. The double sided driving range was expanded to two acres of natural grass driving area, with five target points. The designated short game area was dramatically expanded with greenside and fairway bunkers. The putting surface was doubled in size with the addition of lights for families to enjoy an 18 hole putting outing in the evening. There is a 6-hole walkable par three area that is available certain days of the week to work on your short game, or for families to play together without the pressure of long shots and hazards.
Rod Cook, PGA Professional and Director of Instruction at Tranquilo Golf Club, noted, “We now have the finest practice facility with multi purpose elements throughout the 16 acre complex.” Scott Blanchard, Head Golf Professional and a member of the PGA of America who was most recently Director of Golf at Isleworth Country Club and long time Head Professional at Lake Nona Country Club, says, “This state-of-the art renovation adds the perfect ingredient to make Tranquilo the Top Golf Club in Central Florida.”
NBC/Golf Channel also took notice. Keith Allo, Vice President of Programming & Original Productions liked what he saw coming to fruition at Tranquilo that he brought the necessary underground cable needed to produce outdoor segments for the Golf Channel while the golf practice facility was being finished. Now, all of the local outdoor productions that need a place
to show instruction will be filmed at the new facility.
If you haven’t experienced Tranquilo, time is running out. The club will be available for members and guests of the Four Seasons Orlando only in the very near future.
