Billy Casper Golf(BCG), the largest owner-operator of courses, country clubs and resorts in the United States, held its fourth annual “World’s Largest Golf Outing”- the simultaneous event played at more than 110 BCG courses in 28 states on Monday, August 11th raising more than $875,000, a record high for the Wounded Warrior Project(WWP). Over 12,000 golfers, including 439 injured service members participated in the largest single day fundraiser in the history of WWP, the Jacksonville Florida based organization that honors and empowers injured service men and women and their families.
In just 4 years the event has contributed more than $2 million through a portion of the golfers’ entry fees, contests and 100% of donations made at www.WorldsLargestGolfOuting.com.
Former President Bill Clinton, the 2014 recipient of the PGA of America Distinguished Service Award, supported the Outing in his suburban New York community. The World’s Largest Golf Outing is the brainchild of BCG Chairman and CEO Peter Hill and driven by the company’s 6,000 employees, business partners and loyal golfers. BCG ‘s namesake, Masters and 2-time US Open champion Billy Casper served in the navy, saw firsthand the effects of front-line combat and entertained U S troops in Asia by hitting golf balls off the deck of aircraft carriers. Other golf management companies including Troon Golf from Arizona particpated this year.
Here in Florida, I took a group of golfers and wives to enjoy the day at the Country Club of Winter Haven along with members, guests and other supporters from nearby Mountain Lake and Lake Wales Country Clubs. Everyone enjoyed the day on the new Rees Jones designed course that began with a singing of the Star Spangled Banner along with the Disabled Veterans Color Guard Flag presentation prior to the scramble tee off. Around $ 5,000 was raised at CC of Winter Haven. I recommend anyone who has any empathy for the WWP to either contribute or share in the emotion of the day by playing at a supporting course. ESouthernGolf.com contributed a Cure putter for a raffle prize. Golf Channel’s Morning Drive provided live coverage from another Central Florida BCG course with updates on the money being raised.
“Our nations generosity and the growth of the World’s Largest Golf Outing are amazing,” says Hill. “It’s humbling to witness the unwavering appreciation for our brave troops whose sacrifices protect our daily freedoms.” “We are deeply moved by the outpouring of support from golfers and veterans alike,” says Adam Silva, Chief Development Officer of WWP. “We salute Billy Casper Golf for its altruistic culture and presenting this massive event with tremendous precision and professionalism.” BCG awarded many prizes including fully aid trip to the NIKE Campus in Beaverton, Oregon for a foursome to be fitted for a set of clubs, bag and clothes. In addition tickets to the 2015 PGA Championship were given away.
Jeremiah Puley played at Lincoln Hills Golf Club in California and was among the many veterans who addressed golfers. “We have a saying within Wounded Warrior Project. It’s called living the WWP fireman’s carry Logo. I was physically carried off the battlefield in Iraq and I was the warrior at the top of the logo. Now I get to be the warrior on the bottom of the page carrying my fellow brothers and sisters… because of your support, you too are now Living the Logo.
