The Jan Stephenson and Perry Dye Australian inspired masterpiece collaboration in Mims, Florida, Walkabout Golf Club, has retained Billy Casper Golf to manage all phases of the operation, about 45 minutes east of Orlando on Florida’s Space Coast.
Stephenson who won 26 times and 3 majors in her LPGA career, and now resides in Windermere, Florida and Pete Dye’s unique son, Perry, did a fantastic job recreating some of the ‘down under’ features to the 18 hole, 7,146 yard par 72 design that opened in 2003. The course features lush playing surfaces, native vegetation and gentle mounding. But be assured, this is no walk in the park. Water finds its way in play on 13 holes and the undulating greens are well bunkered providing the need for short game accuracy.
Walkabout Golf Club derives its name from an Australian Aborigine term when 13 year old boys “Go Walkabout” in the wilderness for six months as a rite of passage. They trace the path or ‘songlines’ of their ancestors imitating their heroic deeds. Today, it simply means to take a break from the mundane and enjoy a little spirituality. A good way to do that is walkabout Walkabout.
Your journey on the course should be about four hours, but be assured to match the proper tee(5 to choose from)with your ability or you could be wandering in the wilderness. The #1 handicap hole is the 455 yard par 4, fourth with hazards off the tee, woodlands right and a lake that envelops the green. You won’t see any wallabies, but there is a fair share of wildlife present. All in all, it should be a challenge and a ‘gooday’. For a little extra fun the 19th hole, a par 3, with a green designed in the shape of Australia is there for a mates’ wager.
