Old American Golf Club, a Tripp Davis and Justin Leonard design in The Colony, Texas rose to No. 5 in Golfweek’s 2015 “State-by-State” rankings and is the highest rated golf course in the greater Dallas/ Fort Worth area for the 5th consecutive year. The annual rankings list all the daily-fee layouts and courses accessible via resorts in each state. In 2011, Old American, on the shores of Lake Lewisvlle, debuted at No. 7 in the Texas list.
“Texas is home to hundreds of outstanding golf courses, and we are honored to be recognized as the fifth best golf course in Texas by Golfweek,” says General Manager Mike McCabe. “Since its opening in 2010, Old American has challenged avid golfers with strategy and ever-changing elements to create a memorable experience with each and every round.”
Inspired by the “Golden Age” of golf course architecture, a period of excellence between 1911 and 1937, when the great architects such as A.W. Tillinghast, Seth Raynor, Donald Ross and Perry Maxwell crafted courses into the land with strategic interest and variety as their main objectives, Old American boasts natural contours, hazard styles, native grasses and green shapes that were influenced by some of the greatest designs in golf including Shinnecock Hills, Pinehurst, Prairie Dunes and National Golf Links. Tripp David, ASGCA, a former All-American at the University of Oklahoma, and 1997 Open Champion and 13 time PGA Tour winner, Justin Leonard, designed Old American with those elements. It features six sets of tees, ranging from 5,215 forward markers to the 7,174 -yard “Leonard” tournament tees. Located just 20 minutes north of the Dallas/ Fort Worth International Airport, Old American has played host to numerous prestigious events, including a U.S. Open qualifier and the Texas Women’s Open.
The Golf Club is a regular stop for PGA Tour professionals in the metroplex. Rod Pampling, who sports the Old American logo on his bag, holds the course record of 66, breaking the previous record held by Nathan Green(67). Other PGA pros who utilize the world class practice facilities and tournament caliber layout include Y.E. Yang, John Senden, and Paul Stankowski.
