PGA Tour Legend and World Golf Hall of Fame member Chi Chi Rodriguez will be supporting the fifth annual “World’s Largest Golf Outing” set for Monday August 3rd, benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project.
In the early years of his PGA career, he would place his hat over the hole to capture the birdie or eagle he had just sunk. Some of the Tour players complained, so he changed it to the famous “Toreador dance”, slaying the bull and returning the sword( putter) to its scabbard. Over his 50 year career, Juan Antonio( his proper name) Rodriguez traveled the globe with Billy Casper, whose namesake company, Billy Casper Golf(BGC) created the ‘World’s largest Golf Outing’ event in 2011.
The two combined for 107 professional victories, including 59 on the PGA Tour and 31 on the Senior Tour, now the Champions Tour. Senor Rodriguez is the only Puerto Rican inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Chi Chi said of Casper’s legendary touch on the greens, “Golf balls at the factory hoped they would be putted by Billy Casper”.
Chi Chi is scheduled to participate in the event at the magnificent Tommy Fazio designed Eagle Marsh Golf Club in Jensen Beach, where he will be greeting golfers, signing autographs and sharing heart-warming stories about his experiences and how he taught himself the game of golf with a guava tree branch and a tin can in his youth in Puerto Rico. His dear friendship with the late Billy Casper led him to contribute to the highly emotional Outing played simultaneously at more than 150 courses across America.
“I’m grateful to be part of this event,” says Rodriguez. “Billy Casper was a great champion in life and the chance to support his dream to positively impact the lives of America’s heroes is one I’m thrilled to honor.”
“Hosting one of golf’s great players and entertainers is very special,” says Edward Schoenleber, Director of Operations at Eagle Marsh Golf Club. “Fasten your seat belts because it will be a day of fun and altruism.”
This year Troon, ClubCorp and Toll Golf have joined forces with BCG to make the “World’s Largest Golf Outing” the biggest one day celebration of golf and charity. Golfers are registering in record numbers to raise awareness and funds for injured veterans, their families and care givers to eclipse the almost $1 million dollars donated to Wounded Warrior Project last year, the largest single day fundraiser ever.
