Mystical Golf – Myrtle Beach South Carolina

Myrtle Beach prides itself as the ‘Golf Capital of the World’ with over 100 golf courses located within a 60 mile stretch of Atlantic coastline known as the Grand Strand. Another reason for that label is that you can find some of the highest quality layouts in the country here. If you are looking for an outstanding and memorable golf experience in Myrtle Beach, you need not look any further than the trio of Dan Maples’ unique designs known as Mystical Golf.

The first awesome layout of this triumvirate is the Witch, which opened in 1989, and was awarded 4+1/2 stars from Golf Digest. The par 71 challenging course sits on 500 acres of pristine wetlands teeming with tranquil cypress groves, an abundance of wildlife, and almost a mile of bridges snaking through scenic natural beauty to transport you from one remarkable golf hole to another. We had an audience of 5 alligators on the par 3,185 yard 7th hole which captivated the attention of some of the Northerners who were in our group. The 6800 yard track is a magical world unto itself, with no intrusion from the outside while golf and Mother Nature live in harmony. My favorite hole on the front nine is the 373 yard par4, 9th, which takes some strategic shots to score well. Your tee shot needs to clear a swamp to a landing area from where you will need to hit a short iron over the swamp again to the green. Pick your yardage carefully and you might be scoring par, or a big number could be had. The back nine has more elevation changes. The Tif Dwarf Bermuda greens were in perfect condition, and southern hospitality and smiling faces were abundant among the staff and Head Pro Graham Williams.

Just a few miles north of the Witch, off of Highway 501, you will find the dynamic duo of the Wizard and Man O’War, Golf Digest rated 4 star courses, that opened in 1996. The two totally different layouts were carved out of a pine forest and a 107 acre man made lake which allowed Maples and the owner, Claude Purdue, to mound the Wizard around its 6700+ yards with over a million yards of dirt into a design reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. With over 50 different types of tall grasses and mounds decorated with lovely flowering plants, berms crossing wide fast running fairways throughout, numerous grass faced bunkers and spectacular bent grass greens, the enchanting Wizard gives you a unique taste of links golf like no other in the Grand Strand. I didn’t find Merlin, but could have used his magic wand to conquer the two finishing holes:#17- a classic par 3 that demands a well struck iron into a Royal Dornoch style green surrounded perilously by water, and 18, a par 4 with an island tee, an island fairway and peninsula green that will test your shot making prowess. Once your golf crusade is complete, it is over the moat to the old Scottish style castle like clubhouse. Visit www.mysticalgolf.com to learn more.

Man O’ War is a real thoroughbred 7,000 yard track with ubiquitous water hazards, sculpted and intertwined within the contours of the course. There are not a lot of forced carries, just a few stands of towering pines, tightly mowed fairways, and bent grass greens that average over 10,000 square feet. The course has four sets of tees to give everyone a chance at a fun round. With a slope of 141 you will need all your clubs to harness this par 72 with 2 island greens back to back, and sparkling beauty around every corner. The clubhouse resembles a horse barn and sits on pilings in the lake.

The Witch sits on 500 acres of tranquil cypress groves and wetlands teeming with flora and fauna. Tactical play is rewarded on the par-71, 6,702-yard layout. With 4,000 feet of bridges wending through swamps (front nine) and rolling hills (back nine), golfers may spy cranes, bald eagles, alligators and black bears.

Man-O-War is revered for its back-to-back island greens and water features touching every hole. With a commanding 141 slope rating, the par-72, 6,967-yard layout is offset by straight-forward shots and excellent, bent-grass greens.

Reminiscent of classic, wind-swept links courses in Scotland and Ireland, The Wizard presents deep bunkers, mound-framed fairways and dramatic elevation changes. Trademark stone bridges and an Old-World, castle-style clubhouse add character to the par-72, 6,721-yard shot-maker’s course.
