The Mustang at Lely Resort gets a Facelift

If you wanted to ride the Mustang last summer, you were out of luck. But, since early November the Lee Trevino designed golf course at the Lely Resort Golf & Country Club in Naples is open, looking good and even better to play.

The 21 year old golf course has a new grass to make both play and upkeep a little easier. The new turf is Bimini grass, which was used on the private Classics course at Lely when it was redone last summer, but only in the rough. The Club determined that Bimini grass can be cut at a higher length, takes less water and requires less fertilization than other turf grasses. In addition, Bimini grass stays greener and divots recover faster.

The main focus of the regrassing project was to give the guests new fairways, rough and tee boxes. The existing greens, which are only a few years old, are in excellent shape, so the Club decided to just replace the collars around the greens. Minor changes were also made to the current layout that included additional irrigation, tree trimming and par 3 tee box expansions.

“With this resilient and hearty turf grass, we created some of the best fairways and rough in Naples,” says Lely Regional Manager David Leverant. “Overall the topography of the course did not change, but we enlarged and widened some of the tee boxes and also added some waste bunkers to enhance some specific holes. This is a major upgrade for our public golfers as well as our members which will offer a premier resort golf experience for Naples residents and visitors.”

The 25,000 square foot Mediterranean-inspired clubhouse that services both the Mustang and the Robert Trent Jones Senior designed Flamingo Island golf course also received a major facelift over the summer. The golf-themed Sam Snead’s Oak Grill & Tavern in the clubhouse features all new furniture throughout while the clubhouse interior was repainted and had new carpet installed. The front entry received all new tile along with the men’s and ladies’ locker rooms.

California headquartered American Golf manages the two public Lely Resort courses and the private Gary Player designed Classics Country Club. Classics members enjoy all 54 holes of championship golf, two clubhouses, tennis courts, bocce and a health club. Visit LelyResortGolfandCountryClub for tee times and reservations.
