MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Wednesday 6/25 at the magnificent Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, Block faced a 3-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to win the 47th PGA Professional National Championship. Mike didn’t hesitate sinking it to defeat Jamie Broce of Ohio to become the second Southern California PGA member to win the showcase event for PGA Professionals.
Seven years ago in a sectional qualifier playoff, standing over a similar putt to earn a berth into the 2007 U.S.Open, Michael Block thought to himself, ‘why not?’ and sank it. Since that day he has either written or imprinted those 2 words on his golf balls, and it worked again. Mike is the ninth player to win the Championship in his first attempt and hoist the Walter Hagen Cup.
“It is amazing to be sitting here as the National Champion. I wasn’t leading the Championship for one second until the putt dropped on the second playoff hole,” said Block. “I feel bad for Jamie because he had a chance to win in regulation, but his putt for par hit the lip and tipped out, sending into sudden death.”
With the win Mike earns $75,000 and a spot in this year’s PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky August 7-10 along with 19 other finalists. Rod Perry, last year’s National Champion from Crane Lakes Golf & Country Club in Port Orange, Florida came in tied for 5th and will receive another invitation.
