Top Performers Stand Out During 2015 Legends Tour Season
Several familiar names wrapped up honors as The Legends Tour’s top performers this season.
World Golf Hall of Fame member Juli Inkster posted top-three finishes in all official Legends Tour events and earned her first win on the tour at The Legends Championship in French Lick, IN.
In addition, the Californian was the top money winner with season earnings of $66,680, and was the top performer for Team U.S.A. in the annual ISPS Handa Cup, earning six points for the winning American team and finishing 3-0-0 in her matches.
“It’s always fun to win, but I really liked the venue in French Lick,” said Inkster, who also guided the 2015 U.S. Solheim Cup Team to victory over the Europeans in September.
“It was fun to just be a part of The Legends Tour with the players I grew up playing with and competing against,” added Inkster, who also competed on the LPGA Tour this season and served as a television commentator for Fox Sports.
Inkster, who has 41 professional wins and 7majors, noted that a highlight of the 2015 season for her was partnering with fellow San Jose State University alumna and LPGA veteran Pat Hurst for the American side in the ISPS Handa Cup.
“We had a couple of Spartans on the team, which was a lot of fun because we don’t get to play together often,” Inkster said.
Hurst showed that she was ready for her “rookie” season on The Legends Tour. The Southern California native posted top-five finishes in three tournaments and finished the year with a season stroke average of 68.6, earning $33,322.
“At times, I felt like a rookie again – playing new courses, figuring out which airports to use and restaurants to visit,” said Hurst. “I started off a little rusty, but figured out what I needed to work on, so the last few events were better.”
Like Inkster, Hurst said playing alongside some of the LPGA’s biggest names was a bonus in her inaugural Legends Tour season.
“It is such an honor to be out there with all of them,” said Hurst, a six-time winner with 1 major on the LPGA Tour. “I enjoy playing with the women I have always looked up to and they all are still very competitive.
Sweden’s Liselotte Neumann earned her second win on The Legends Tour at the season-closing Walgreens Charity Championship at The Seagate Country Club. The 2013 winning European Solheim Cup captain finished third in season earnings with $36,921.
Virginia’s Kris Tschetter notched her inaugural win on The Legends Tour in March at the season-opening Walgreens Charity Classic in Sun City West, Ariz. Tschetter finished second in earnings at $36,943, while Florida’s Laurie Rinker collected her fourth career Legends Tour victory at the Chico’s Patty Berg Memorial, an unofficial event featuring combined play with the LPGA’s Symetra Tour.
LPGA Tour veteran Catriona Matthew of Scotland made her debut Legends Tour appearance at the ISPS Handa Cup. Matthew, who played for Europe in the 2015 Solheim Cup in Germany, also competed for the World Team at the Handa Cup, held at Palm-Aire Country Club in Sarasota, Fla. Matthew fired the tour’s low round of the year during her singles match against Hurst with a blistering 7-under 65 to win her match for the international side.
