The Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association(MBAGCOA) has named the Moorland Golf Club in the Legends Resort its Course of the Year over the more than 100 great layouts in the “Golf Capital of the World.” The MBAGCOA evaluates the nominees for this prestigious award on four criteria: outstanding contribution to the community, significant contribution to the game of golf, exceptional quality of the golf course and the ownership and management. By the virtue of winning the award, Moorland becomes a candidate for South Carolina’s #1 pick and potentially national honors.
“Congratulations to Moorland and the Legends Resort on being voted Course of the Year, one of the Grand Strand’s highest honors,” said Tracey Conner, Executive Director of the MBAGCOA. “Moorland is one of Myrtle Beach’s best and most popular courses, and the Arnold Palmer Golf owned and managed Resort has always been at the forefront of the area’s Grow the Game and charitable initiatives.”
The 4.5 star rated Moorland, according to Golf Digest’s prestigious Best Places to Play Guide, has long been one of the area’s critically acclaimed and challenging designs. Architect P. B. Dye utilized waste and pot bunkers, water features and elevation changes to create a ‘target’ layout that is both visually stunning and enjoyable to play. Considered one of the greatest challenges on the East Coast, the 248 yard par 4, 16th bunker in front of the green is known as “Hell’s Half Acre”.
The Legends Resort has been instrumental in raising money for local charities and has donated hundreds of rounds valued at more than $30,000 that benefitted Alzheimer’s, Habitat for Humanity and Toys for Tots, just to name a few. Additionally, they offer complimentary instructional clinics twice a week, allows kids to play free, and Moorland is the host facility for the First Tee of Myrtle Beach and Golf Academy of America.
