Fred Couples Receives Gold Tee Award

gold tee awardWorld Golf Hall of Famer Fred Couples received one of golf’s most prestigious honors, the Gold Tee Award, from the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association(MGWA) at their 63rd National Awards Dinner, June 23rd at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, New York. The Gold Tee is one of the nation’s highest honors awarded to an individual whose career achievements exemplify the spirit and traditions of the game of golf.

One of the most popular golfers in the modern era worldwide for three decades ‘Boom Boom’, his nickname from the PGA Tour, joins a who’s who of golf Gold Tee recipients including Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam.

The 54 year old Couples, the 1992 Masters champion, won 15 times on the PGA Tour including two Players Championships. Most recently, Freddie captained his third straight President’s Cup winning U.S. team. Couples was #1 in the world, a two-time PGA Tour Player of the Year, and played on 5 consecutive Ryder Cup teams.

Now a force on the Champions Tour, Freddie has won the Senior PGA Championship and the 2012 Senior British Open Championship. Always known for his smooth swing and long drives, ‘Boom Boom’ was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013.

“We are thrilled to honor an all-time fan favorite,” said MGWA President Bruce Beck. “Freddie is a class act whose overall achievements rival anyone from his era.”

Since 1952, the MGWA has recognized the game’s greatest players, contributors and organizations at its yearly national Awards Dinner- the longest running and often the largest golf reception in the U.S.A. each year. Long-time MGWA member and Fred’s University of Houston roommate, Jim Nantz says, ” There is no dinner in America that celebrates golf like this one.” MGWA has produced a special video to celebrate 6 decades of the Dinner; https://vimeo.com/63849701

Golf’s leading organizations support the dinner-USGA, PGA of America, PGA TOUR, LPGA, MGA, MetLife and Rolex. The Awards Dinner has raised over 1.5 million dollars for Caddie Scholarship programs in the metropolitan New York area, The Metropolitan Golf Association Foundation, and the Dave Mar Journalism Scholarship at Columbia University.

On behalf of the eSouthernGOLF.com, I would like to congratulate Frederick Steven Couples on his 2014 Gold Tee Award.
