FootGolf isn’t the latest craze yet, but the folks at Meadowlands Golf Club in Calabash, North Carolina hope it catches on with golfers and soccer players in Brunswick County. The 7000 plus yard William Byrd designed Meadowlands has been accredited as a FootGolf facility by the American FootGolf League. The FootGolf course debuted in June with an exhibition pro-am tournament featuring members of Myrtle Beach’s professional soccer tea, Mutiny. It officially opened this month. Meadowlands joins three other NC golf courses operating with a FootGolf layout: Sunset Hills, Charlotte, Northgreen CC, Rocky Mount and Keith Hills, Buies Creek.
FootGolf is played with a #5 soccer ball and a 21 inch hole on a 9 or 18 hole layout hole on the same land as the regulation golf course. There are over 30 countries playing it at this time. In the Unites States, the American FootGolf League uses golf courses only and is strictly played under rules of the Federation of International FootGOLF(FIFG). Since July of 2012 over 180 golf courses have incorporated FootGolf in 36 states. There are leagues in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Canada and it may very well be the fastest growing sport in North America. The Mayans warned us, Nostradamus predicted it and since 2011 FootGolf is being played worldwide. For more information go to www.FootGolf.net
