Carolina Trace Country Club Celebrates Opening of Lake Course
Carolina Trace Country Club celebrated the opening of the award-winning Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed Lake Course after a complete renovation. Located in Sanford, in the northern edge of North Carolina’s famed Sandhills region, Carolina Trace is a gated highly amenitized, top-tier club featuring two championship courses, both designed by RTJ Sr., tennis courts, pool, fitness center, marina on 315 acre Lake Trace, fine dining and picturesque views of the lake.
“We are excited to complete this project and restore the Lake Course to its original glory,” says David McDonald, President of Fort-Worth based Escalante Golf, which acquired the club last year. “Robert Trent Jones Sr. is one of the most respected golf course architects of all time, and the resulting layout will challenge accomplished and novice players alike.”
Highlights of the renovation include: leveled and squared tee complexes with additional tees for every skill level; a series of new bunkers to enhance shot value and hole definition; relocation and rehabilitation of existing bunkers with new drainage liners and the best sand material available; and the elimination of numerous bunkers to improve playability. ASGCA long time architect David Whelchel along with Golf Course Superintendent Tim Hart oversaw and managed the project.
Trees that encroached onto the course over the past 40 years were removed or trimmed to open up site lines and return the layout to its original form. All fairways were re-contoured to provide a more consistent and smoother playing surface. Finally, the existing asphalt cart paths will be removed and replaced with 8 foot wide concrete ones.
Carolina Trace Country Club is a private club offering its members 36 fantastic championship golf with highly personalized service and a state-of-the art practice facility. However, limited outside play is allowed for golfers interested in experiencing the courses and the club’s 30,000 square foot clubhouse and lifestyle. “Our vision for Carolina Trace entails elevating and enhancing every aspect of the club and member experience,” adds McDonald. “It begins with the Lake Course and will continue with other aspects of the club. Our entire team has been enamored with Carolina Trace since we first drove through the gates and saw the lake setting. It is a wonderful community and we are truly excited to be its stewards. Architect David Whelchel and Superintendent Tim Hart and their team did a fantastic job and the end result is something that our members and guests will
